Centaur Stealth ( ? )
In talking with other centaurs, and reading what they've written, I've discovered something about myself. Many have commented on the effect they have had on regular humans. How they stop and stare and perhaps say rude things and how as centaurs they are the center of attention where ever they go. I just don't seem to have that problem.
I find that when folks first meet me, they don't seem to be too interested in my form. Oh, someone I deal with directly will casually ask about it, and they accept generalized answers happily, but in general, other than curious glances, folks don't seem to notice me.
Of course, my friends, and people who see me often are aware of my form, and some even go out of their way to make special accommodations for me. But they seem to just accept it, and act like it's a small issue, like having a beard, or using a cane, it just isn't a big deal.
I remember when I went out shopping for my new van. Mavra was moving down, and I wanted something nice to drive her around in. Plus, the old van was ready to be replaced anyway. It was a one tonner, but with my weight, It was at, or over it's limit every time I drove it, so it was tired, and ready for a rest.
I went to the local dealers, Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, shopping around. Most places, I was able to drive in, get out, and look around before I had someone even notice I was there. When they did, I got pretty much the standard car salesman treatment, "Hiya, how you doing, looking for a new car? Hey, Have I got a deal for you!" kind of thing.
I would tell them I was looking for a van, and that as he could see I had special requirements. It usually wasn't until that point that my form, the fact that I was a centaur, seemed to register with them. But it was usually just kind of blown off, the salesman would be more interested in what it was I needed and wanted, than what I was.
It seemed to me that 'what I was' was obvious to them. I mean, I'm white and gold, eight and a half feet tall, and weigh over a ton, I do stand out. There was some discussion about how I sat, what I weighed, how I would like the van to accommodate me. But no discussion at all concerning 'what' the van was accommodating. The fact that I was a centaur just seemed to fall by the wayside. And this is true of almost everyone I deal with.
Now, for a bit of history. I used to be a regular human male, I became a centaur as a result of some sort of 'black fund' experiments done by some group convinced that being able to change Humans into centaurs would prove to have useful military or covert uses. Looking at me now, I can't imagine what use a form like mine might be in such operations, but that's what caused my change, as I understand it. The whole story is posted here.
So, here's my theory; The experimenters knew that a centaur was going to be larger and more obvious than a Human. Without knowing exactly what use they had planned for centaurs, it's still obvious that camouflage would be an asset. Let's say that in the genetic manipulations these 'scientists' made on me, they added some sort of 'stealth' function. Some pheromone, or brain waves or something, that allowed this 'centaur warrior / spy', to remain hidden, or at least not noticeable. It might explain why my appearance is seen as nothing to take note of by people.
My form isn't hidden from people, but these 'stealth functions' for want of a better term seems to just dissuade folks from caring about it. It's as though they just say, "Yeah, he's a centaur, but so what?" Giving me the ability to work and interact with people without my form being noticed.
I know it's a strange premise, being as I'm big, my coloration is bright, and the worth of a centaur in present day military or covert activities is negligible at best, but I can't think of a better explanation.
