centaursite.com - Centaurs in Comics

Quote, by centaursite.com:

Centaurs have appeared either as featured or secondary characters in a number of comic books,or as they're called now 'graphic novels'. Sometimes as the hero, more often as a villian, they have propelled many a story forward for a wide range of themes, genres, and subjects. Not the most popular of characters, they always add a certain 'alien' aspect to the characters they portray.

Although usually only featured for their unusual appearance, and seldom having any 'super powers' or abilities beyond that of being 'strong as a horse' and able to gallop, there have been a few stories where the 'situation' of being a centaur has been illuminated. As villians, they generally adhere to the sterotype of fighters or, as you might imagine, archers. As good guys, they are either one of a hidden race who have made contact with humans, or the more popular, and common circumstance of being humans who have been transformed into centaurs. There is also at least one story of a centaur who wanted to be a human, and was turned into a horse. In any case, it is a pleasure to see fine artists, well, usually fine artists... well, artists who can draw better than I can depict the centaur form.

Below are comics that range from Captain Marvel to Superman, to 'Claw', a Conan wanna be, and Arak, another Conan wanna be (There seems to be a pattern here). Through time, the unique appearance, power or skill of the centaur has found a place in both great stories, and pulp fiction.

By clicking on the thumbnails, you can go to another webpage with full comic pages, or frames of comics featuring centaurs. Many of these comics are available at your local comic shop, or on-line. I got most of these through Amazon.com and eBay.

Quote, by Centaursite.com - The New Comet as a Centaur:

This page concerns the 'new' version of Comet. Origionally, Comet was the pet horse of Supergirl. His origional 'origions' story, told of how he used to be a centaur in (Where else?) ancient Greece, and was in love with (Who else?) the goddess Circe. I guess the centaur females he knew just didn't have what it took. After saving Circe from being poisened by a rival wizard, she offered to grant Biron a wish as a reward. Biron, in a complete reversal of most centaur fans, asked to be changed from centaur to human form. As is usual with magic spells, the potients got mixed up and Biron went from centaur to horse form. More information on the origional Comet's story can be found on the Biron the Centaur / Comet the Superhorse page.

Comet, along with Supergirl, Superman, and the complete history of the Superman universe (or universes) has changed a few times in the past years. Absent for a long time, Comet was brought back in the Supergirl 'Earth Angel' series.

This version of Comet has never been to ancient Greece, and was born human. The story seems to be, Andy Jones was a successful jockey. He did well, but an accident during a horse race left him paralysed. Having no hope of recovery he was offered a chance by the Atlas Corporation to recover by letting their 'mad science team',do an experiment on him. Having little choice, he agreed.

He was then somehow given horse serum, or DNA or something in the Atlas 'experiement'. and ends uplooking somewhat equine with hooves instead of feet, a long equine face and three fingered hands, etc. He finds he has 'superpowers' such as flight etc. Comet, in his new form runs across this human woman who is mountain climbing and is injured. Some how she and Comet die and are combined and can change from her form to his, adding an additional sexual twist to his circumstance.

Later, Comet finds he has additional powers when he finds he can take on centaur form. He is like the original Comet in that he can fly, has superpowers and has the form of a Centaur. Things that the old Comet, Superhorse, and Byron, all could do, but not at the same time. To get the whole story you can go to The Story of the New Comet Page, or better yet, go to your local comic shop and buy the comics.

Anyway, here are images of the new version of Comet in Centaur form.

Quote, by The Story of the New Comet - The Comic Characters Database by Cristina Urdiales:

Name: Andrew 'Andy' Jones/ Andrea 'Andy' Martinez
Group: None
Origin: Unrevealed
First appearance: Supergirl #10 as Andrea Martinez
Supergirl #14 as Comet
Supergirl #22 as Andrew Jones
Known Relatives:
Cutter Sharp (ex-husband)
Copyright:

BRIEF HISTORY
Andrew Jones was a top jockey until he suffered an accident: he fell off his horse and was massacred by the hooves of the horses behind. He survived, but he would never move again and, having no insurance nor family, he quickly went broke. Then, he got an offer he could not refuse: someone called Mr Stubbs, speaking in the name of Mr Carnivean, head of Atlas Corp, offered him a new life if he willed to be used in their experiments. Jones accepted and he was fooled and turned into a hybrid named Zed one, a mix of human and horse, capable of flying fast as a comet. The man didn't take it well when he discovered what his new body was, but he took it even worse when he found out that he was supposed to work for the company in unclear bussinesses, so he escaped, pursued by a group of superhuman beings known as The Stable.
Somewhere else, Andrea Martinez was not happy either. She had been abused by her parents as a child and had been pushed into being someone she was not. As the only possible escape from her parents, she married Cutter Sharp in a rush, but soon discovered that her marriage was a failure, for she was homosexual. When she tried to tell her parents, they told her never to come back. Then, the spiral down really started. She went into drugs and alcohol and finally her lack of interest in life translated into recklesness. Finally, she decided to climb mount Everest solo and had an accident. When she was about to die, Andrew Jones came to save her, but they were trapped by an avalanche and died, just to become a new creature: an earth-born angel. The new being was both Martinez and Jones, and could turn from one to another at wish. The female identity was perfect to hide from the Stable, and so Andy Martinez became the most usual appearance. She became a comedian and used their powers just to fly from one show to the following one, using the name Andy Jones in stage.
Andy Jones went to Leesburg for a show, the city where her ex-husband lived. Cutter took Mattie Harcourt, Linda Danvers and Dick Malverne to her show, and, feeling attracted to Linda, she decided to stay. Though Linda had a sort of relationship with Dick, Supergirl couldn't help but liking Comet, unaware of his female side. This might be due to the earth-born angel stuff, since there is supposed to be three of them, Fire -Supergirl herself-, Light and Love, presumably Comet. Supergirl helped Comet with the Stable and got the money his former employers wanted in exchange for his freedom. Comet revealed Supergirl his/her identity to thank her and Supergirl inmediately found the similitudes with her own story and told him Linda's identity as well. Comet eventually became a sort of sidekick to Linda, but he/she was captured by the Carnivore -Carnivean's real identity and trapped and tortured in the between city, at an alternative dimension. Andy was fooled into thinking that Supergirl did not care for her, although in fact she was desperately looking for the woman. Thus, she was brainwashed into doing the Carnivore's will and attacking Supergirl at first sight. Andy reached her full potential while she was kidnapped and became a true match for the hero, who was also against the idea of hurting Comet.
Thanks to his tricks, the Carnivore managed to subdue all three earth born angels and broke into Heaven, but eventually Linda freed herself with some help from her 'guardian angel' and freed the other two angels as well to defeat the creature. After that, Andy even managed to reconciliate with her father, who was now in a wheel chair because of an accident, and learnt that her mother had died of cancer longing to see her. She is at peace right now.

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Biron the Centaur / Comet the Superhorse:

In the old 'Silver and Golden age' of comics, Supergirl had a couple of 'pets', Streaky the Supercat, who came from Krypton, and of course Comet, the Superhorse. Comet was a regular looking horse, but he had superpowers. He could fly, and had heat vision etc. He didn't come from Krypton however, and he hadn't always been a horse.

Comet used to be a centaur in ancient Greece named Biron who fell in love with the goddess Circe. Although Circe was a lovely human woman, why he would give up his centaur form to be with her is difficult to understand. Anyway, after saving her from Maldor,an evil rival wizard, Circe was so grateful she rewarded Biron by attempting to grant his greatest wish, and cast a spell to transform him into human form.

As might be expected, the spell didn't go as planned, and of course was irreversible. Instead of transforming Biron into a human, she turned him into a horse. Ack! But to make up for his loss of hands, speech, and any possibility of relations with Circe or any human woman, she awarded him superpowers. That'll be a great consolation as he stands in a field eating grass.

Anyway, in the wonderful world of superheros, Biron accepts his new form and ends up in the 'present day' of the 50s and 60s to become Supergirl's pet. In the Superman universe, Comet has telepathic abilities so Supergirl is fully aware of his history. As he knows her secret identity and her own story, she feels she can be a bit more at ease with him. In later issues, it is found that under certain circumstances, Comet can return to centaur, then to human form. Where as 'Bronco Bill', he and Supergirl fall in love. His changing from human to centaur to horse form and back again, give an interesting sexual subtext to these occurrences. I won't go there.

The current Comet has a whole different history. His origion has nothing to do with 'magic', and the sexual subtext of the Comet of the present day, makes Biron's attraction to Circe look tame. Go to The New Comet page for pictures and information concerning his story.

This issue of Action Comics reveals where and how Comet the Super Horse came to be. Not always a 'super horse', he was once a centaur in ancient Greece. Click on the thumbnails to see how he tells his story to Supergirl.
Only the pages featuring Comet, or Biron in centaur form, telling his story are shown here.

So Supergirl now has the alliance of a centaur who has been changed into a horse. On the previous page, Supergirl 'shoes' the invunerable 'horse' by using her heat vison to melt the edges of his hooves to hold the shoes on, glueing them on in a sense. We then see her 'branding' him in the first of the displayed pages. I won't even go into how even her powers can effect an 'invunerable' being.

So now Supergirl and Superhorse are buddies, and can go on adventures together. And maybe more...

In this issue, Superman asks Superhorse to use his superpowers to travel to the planet Xerox (I'm not kidding!) that orbits a red sun. Superman and Supergirl only have superpowers under a yellow sun, but as Superhorse's powers are magical, he isn't restricted by the color of the sun. While there, a spell is cast that causes him to go from horse to centaur form, and then to that of a human.

This opens up some interesting possibilities for the already strong attraction between Biron / Comet and Supergirl. As is shown in the following pages...

As Biron / Comet - Superhorse / Bill Starr only retains his human form as long as a comet is 'in range', the difficulties his romance may encounter as the comet moves out of range can only be imagined.

Quote, by Centaursite.com - For Whom the Gods Destroy:

For Whom the Gods Destroy is a 4 issue prestige format mini-series by DC comics that was issued in the summer of 2000.

This is one in a series called 'Elseworlds'. The premise being that the Germans won World War II and the (Greek) Gods are at war amongst themselves. Apparently it was supposed to be a 'What if the Trojan War was World War II with some Superheroes tossed in' sort of story.

These pages are from issue #3 of this series, and are just the ones showing the centaur characters. The story gives no explanation on how Superman ends up a centaur. The last time we saw him before this, he was losing a fight with Typhoon towards the end of issue #2 and the reappears as a centaur in the middle of issue #3.

Although a bit disjointed, and confusing, it's an interesting story. Here's Superman, the man of steel, now a centaur. His power and strength personified by his equine aspect. The threat of his superpowers uncontrolled depicted in his drunken and passionate wildness before brought to his senses by the thought of having harmed Lana Lang.

The images of Superman, in centaur form in a house are nice, as seeing him with humans (Well, sort of) of normal stature. His size is made clear by seeing him in the context of everyday objects, chairs, lamps, and Hecate and Lana standing in front of him, all illustrate his size. If we estimate Lana as standing only 5 feet tall (and she's surely taller than that), Clark would be nearly eight feet in height. It's also interesting to see a Centaur in a context of 'relaxing', just walking along, not in a 'heroic pose'.

And of course later, when Lois takes centaur form... Well, if I had been turned into a Centaur, and the girl I'd loved, but had never been able to be with, was walking along a romantic moon-lit beach with me became one too, and we were able to... Well anyway, you get the idea.

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Lois Lane as a Centaur:

DC comics has a few male centaur characters, most notably the origional Biron / Comet / Superhorse and his later incarnation as seen in the new Supergirl series of comics. A few others have shown up as guest stars or featured characters in other comics.

These characters are usually male, and more often than not 'bad guys'. One, Biron was changed from centaur to horse, and Comet, the new version, was changed from human male to centaur, and human female. The new Comet has some issues. But with all the male centaurs in comics, you have to wonder, aren't there any female centaurs?

Oh sure, we saw the one featured in the Claw comic, but she... well, you'll have to read it to find out why we can't count her. And of course, there's Lana Lang taking centaur form in For Whom the Gods Destroy, but she didn't retain the form.

And, in fact, Lois doesn't retain her centaur form either. Just like Biron / Comet / Superhorse, Lois is only a centaur for a short time as she shifts from human to horse form.

I only have these scans, but from them it seems that Maldor, who caused Biron to lose his centaur form, has somehow come to the 'present day' to woo Lois Lane. Lois resists his advances and Maldor punishes her by making her a 'Superhorse' like Biron.

Just an observation, but if Maldor 'wanted' Lois, seems he'd use some mind control or love potion to make her 'want' him, not turn her into a horse, with superpowers! And finally, since he was all upset with Biron and caused him to change into a horse, why would he give him a mate? Seems if I had become a horse, I'd want a mate who had had the same experience. I don't find at all attractive the idea of 'being with' a horse who had the mind of a horse...

Ahem.. Anyway, here are the three or four pages and images that illustrate Lois Lane's short time as a centaur

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Weird War - The Last Calvary Charge - Major Brooke fights nazis
after becoming a centaur:

Here's another story of a human being changed into a centaur. And despite the cover, he's a good guy!

The poor ancient Greeks. I'm sure if they knew how their stories and gods were corrupted today, they would have destroyed all evidence of them. Lucky for us, they didn't and occasionally their heroes and legends bring us enjoyment, this is one of those times.

This story takes place during WWII. The British are fighting in (guess where?) Greece against the mean old nazis. Major Brooke was a member of the British Calvary in WWI and still believes a man on a horse is the best way to fight. The Colonel is disgusted at Brooke's refusal to accept 'modern' warfare, calling him old fashioned.

Brooke and a scouting troup are sent around to try and cut off the nazis, but they are ambushed! All are killed, except for Brooke who gets wounded. He takes cover in (where else?) an ancient temple, and bemoans the fact that had his troops been mounted, they all would have survived. Turns out the temple is that of (who else?) Circe, who hears his admiration for his animal and..well, you can figure out what she does from the cover.

Not terrible art, and the story is predictable, but entertaining none the less.

(I'm going to stop including so many images going forward... You can find them all at https://web.archive.org/web/20080726171548/http://www.centaursite.com/comics/ , assuming the Internet Archive is still up in your present year )

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Soulsearchers Hot 2 Trot:

Hot 2 Trot is a female centaur who is a featured, but not lead character in a comic series named Soulsearchers.

A group of mercenaries, the Soulsearchers seem to travel not only in the physical world, but through the temporial one too. That's time travel for the less well read among us. Sometimes they are in the present day, other times their adventures are in anchient days. There is a lot of Dungeons and Dragons influence in their adventure. All of the folks in this group have special powers, abilities, or, as in Hot 2 Trot's case, physical attributes. Like the leader of the group, a human who is now a groundhog, she too was transformed from human into centaur form.

Although the series starts with Hot 2 Trot in centaur form, it seems her abilities and contribution to the group were not always a result of that. She was human when she joined them, and in a 'flashback' episode, we find how she became a centaur.

Traveling through time due to an accident, curse, mix-up, or plot device, the Soulsearchers find themselves in (Surprize!) anchient Greece, where they meet (Can you guess?) Circe! Not being very kind hearted, she uses her powers to do what she's apparently commonly known for, and starts changing folks into animals. Hot 2 Trot, is in the process of being changed into a horse when rescue arrives, and the spell is stopped mid-transformation, leaving her with the body of a centaur.

Amazingly, Hot 2 Trot retains all her human facilities and abilities, and her partially transformed body is that of a perfecly formed and functioning centaur. Pretty lucky, eh?

In spite of her unfortunate choice of name, she is not at all angsty about her form, and actually seems to enjoy it. One reason for this is her convenient loss of memory of her life before her change. This is another common occurance in human to centaur transformed characters. Of course, her weapon of choice is the bow, and with her weight and hooves, she's a formidable fighter in close quarters.

There are many more pages of Hot 2 Trot, here are just a few. The comic 'Soul Searchers and Company is sometimes available at comic cons and on line. I do not know if it is still being published.

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Metal Men:

The Metal Men, was a comic published in the 60s and 70s (?) that told of a group of robots built by Dr. Magnus (?). He built each out of a specific metal and, with the hopes of the science of the future at that time holding sway, made each of them 'morphic', or able to change shape. Never mind the physics involved, (Not that the physics involved in human to centaur transformations are of primary consideration.) these robots, with their shape shifting powers, had displays of angst, which have become almost a requirement of today's comic book heroes. Their inventor dealt with not only the personalities of the robots, but led them on adventures. They saved the world against crazed super-beings, mad scientists, and evil villians, using their unique superpowers and occaisional flashes of wit and cleverness.

In this issue, the Metal Men, which is kind of a poor name as two of them seem to be female, well, as 'female' as the 'male' robots are male, find themselves confronted with a giant centaur. Unlike the dipiction on the cover, the centaur is not made of metal. In fact, he is a regular flesh and blood centaur only giant sized.

It seems in the ancient past, this centaur fell in love with (Can you guess?) a human woman. Why it is that centaurs fall in love with human women and not female centaurs beats me, but that seems to be standard fare in centaur stories. The centaur saves a 'nymph' from a serpent and as he carries her to safety riding upon his equine back, he falls in love. Turns out, the serpent was the god Jove (?) who was planning on seducing the nymph. So, rather than attacking or punishing the centaur, Jove turns the girl to stone. He then makes the centaur giant sized, and sends him off to (where else?) Alpha Centauri with the curse that he cannot return until the stone nymph, the statue comes back to life.

One of the Metal Men, a 'female' robot, just happens to look like the nymph the centaur loves, and there-in lies the story. This robot is the 'statue' coming to life. This allows the centaur to return to earth from Alpha Centauri. He sees the robot, and thinks it's the nymph, and discovering she isn't real, thinks it's the statue and Jove is again toying with him. This makes him go on a rampage, and... well, the usual 'horse-like' actions and goofy fighting take place.

Double up on your suspension of disbelief before reading this.

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Arak, Son of Thunder:

Arak, who has a striking similarity to Claw, is another 'clone' of Conan the Barabarian. Conan was the creation of Robert E. Howard, who made a good living writing fantasy and sience fiction in the 1930's. Although he tried his hand at other genres, Conan was his bread and butter until his death in 1936.

In the 60's and 70's, DC comics obtained the rights to the Conan books and published a fairly successful series of comics based on the stories. As DC seemed to be making money hand over fist with this title, other manifestations of the adventures of barbarians seemed like a good idea. Even DC, who had the rights to Conan, diluted the customer base by releasing Arak, Son of Thunder. With the release of the film Conan the Barbarian and it's sequals, all things Conan became popular, including comics.

As a side note, Conan the Barbarian is the film that gave Arnold Schwarzenegger his boost to stardom. Unfortunately, none of the Conan films had any centaurs in them. In fact, none of Arnold's films have had any either.

Arak seemed to be based more on Native Americans than Nordic barbarians, but the general plot was the same. A lone fighter, whose goal will not be blocked by any mortal man, god, evil-doer, wizard, shaman, or monster. The reader follows Arak through his adventures as he tries to bring his quest to fruition.

Having never been a fan of Conan I never read many of the comics, so I never read any of the take-offs, including Arak. But this issue caught my eye in a comic shop, due to the cover, so I bought it. This seems to be one in a series, but I haven't found the next issue. As usual, only the pages with centaur images are posted.

Quote, by Centaursite.com - The Micronauts:

The origination of my name, and the basis for my appearance. Here are posted all of the pages of the Micronauts comic books which feature Prince Argon. Argon's story is a subplot in the Micronaut's story, but even so, is depicted in 49 pages within a series of 26 comic issues.

After killing the King and Queen of the Microverse, a subatomic universe enclosed in the atoms of our world, Prince Argon and his sister Princess Mari are pursued by the evil Baron Karza who is masterminding the coup and destruction of the royal family. Karza captures Prince Argon and his Horse Oberon, and transports them to the Body Banks. Using genetic grafting techniques, he fuses Argon's body to that of his horse's making him a centaur. 'Slug', a leader of the resistance, breaks into his cell in the body banks. She gasps at seeing the Prince in this form and asks, "Speak softly man, but speak the truth, are you Prince Argon, Force Commander of Homeworld whom I have come to rescue?" Of course, he is and, assisted by 'Slug' escapes the Body Banks to put on the armor of the 'Force Commander' to lead the resistance to victory. Due to the evil that the Body Banks represent, Argon refuses to have them reopened, even to return himself to human form.

Later, it is implied that 'Slug' who is not at all unattractive, is to become Argon's Queen. As Argon remains a centaur, and 'Slug' is a Human, she will be Queen in name only. (Unless she has something in common with Katherine the Great.)

Argon seems to settle down to life as a centaur with 'Slug', who retains her rebel nick name. As portrayed by several writers and artists, Argon's appearance, which is nicely portrayed in issue 4 (The scene in which his gives the, 'For you will find only Argon the Centaur' speech) to seemingly rough sketches after the 'Saga's End' issue featuring the fight with Karza who has the ability to transform into Centaur form. The quality of the art lessons for several issues after this one, and then increases in quality as Argon's transformation is shown to be more than just physical. Under the influence of Karza, he kidnaps 'Slug' to join the 'bad guys' in the desert, who then, in a wonderful revisionist history plot twist reveals that Karza's 'psychic energy' has been planted in Argon's Centaur form. Argon, as he is being 'sacrificed', seemingly joyfully to revive Karza, has a sudden flash of realization as he meets his doom, and renounces his actions.

There are 49 pages in this comic series which feature Prince Argon in centaur form. They are scanned at 150dpi and should be easy to read on a mainstream browser. They will, unless you are on a T1, ADSL, or ISDN line, take some time to load, but all told, this is the longest and most complete Centaur appearance I'm aware of, next to that of Timoth in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons comic series. Enjoy!

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Claw and a Female Centaur:

As discussed on the page of Arak images, Claw was a take off on the popular Conan the Barabarian series of comics released by, DC. As you may note, Conan, Arak and Claw, were all released by DC. I suppose they, like a resturant, felt that if their customers wanted beef, they might like it prepared in slightly different ways.

Conan, as you may recall was on some sort of quest, as was Arak, and apparently Claw. All were 'barbarians' of differing degree, but the stories in all of the comics followed a familiar pattern. Conan, Arak, and Claw, (Heretofor named Barbarian,) are minding their own business in pursuit of their quests. Barbarian is either accousted by bad guys, hears of a wrong he must right, overhears a plot, sees a crime, or finds a lady in distress as in this comic, and his quest is either hindered or advanced by the issues's circumstances.

Fantasia not withstanding, Claw finds a young woman up to her waist in quicksand, and with his horse and a few handy and remarkably strong vines, makes short work of her recue. As his horse pulls and strains at what seems to be a remarkable abount of weight for such a delicate looking beauty, she is pulled out to reveal... Ta dah! She's a centaur! And a right lovely one at that. With a few flicks of her tail, she is neat and clean. There is little if any notice taken in the story of Claw's horse's reaction to this revelation.

In a somewhat interesting twist, the story goes on to reveal, after a 'quest' to get some magical item... who cares? Just the pages with the centaur are featured her, that a wizard told the female centaur that she was a human who was changed into a centaur. Her quest is to change herself back. It turns out, the wizard used a spell to make her buy his story, and she had been a centaur all her life.

It's a sad story, but the artwork isn't too bad.

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Captain Marvel:

Well, here is a comic that shows centaurs, Mermaids, satyrs and other 'mythologicals' in a good light. None of the stereotypical 'animalistic savage beast' sort of thing, but as what most of them are, reasonable people who are just trying to get along in the world.

Not sure what the story is on Captian Marvel. According to the cover, he was somehow given the powers of a number of ancient gods and 'great men. In his spare time, when he isn't saving the world, he's a news reporter for some TV station. A bit of an update on the tried and true superhero working in his secret identity at some place that gathers news so when he is needed he will know it, say... like a newspaper.

Captian Marvel seems to be pretty young in his secret identity, and older and more mature in his Captian Mavrvel suit. As usual in superhero transformations, he's better looking too.

As for the centaurs in this story, the art isn't bad, and they seem like regular folks, just a lot larger and stronger and just plain bigger. Anyway, I've included the whole comic here, just because I could.

Enjoy

Imagine that the fall of civilization predicted in the year 2000, actually happened. Also imagine that the hoped for technical, and medical achievments that we hope to have in the next 300 years, had happened by 1950. Then you might be now living in a world like that occupied by Tiger Woman.

it is the future. Great theme parks have been built where you can not only experience new things, but be new things. Things like winged humans, or mermaids or...

Centaurs. Now imagine civilization has fallen. For years and years, the technology and history of the past has been left behind. Those who had taken on these forms were left transformed as the world collapsed. Enough survived to raise families, and muddle on to survive. Their history as 'changelings' forgotten. This is what life is like. The giant parks are populated by what to many people of today would think of as mythological 'beasts', running wild and surviving in some cases better than those who remained human.

This is that story. Not a bad concept, and the art is ok. Although the centaur's problem with his tail made me cringe!

(I need to acquire this comic and take some scans, nobody seems to have it...)

It's too bad that in most human to centaur transformation stories, the people who get new forms are shocked and / orrepulsed at their new appearance. It's a shame to waste such a great experience on those who refuse to see the wonderful power and grace of the centaur form. It's as though they feel that as their bodies are improved with the addition of an equine aspect, their minds are reduced to that of a dumb animal. They have no concept that there is no reason a centaur has to 'smell like a horse' or relieve itself in the street. A centaur is not a horse, it is a wonderful combination of...

Well, that's for another page.

In this story, the bodies of the human are made 'equal' to their minds. Although ignorant and hateful, the humans are put on an equal footing, or 'hooving' with their 'prey', a unicorn. Apparently set in Greece, the hunters are searching to capture a unicorn which their guide has told them exists in these woods. Keeping just ahead of them, the unicorn allows them to go further and further into the forest, until they are far from civilization; or witnesses.

After foolishly trying to bring the unicorn down with traquilizer darts, they chase the unicorn. It stands before them, seeming to dare them to follow. They do and find an urn, with a strange message upon it in ancient Greek. The husband, drinks as the wife protests but, being a 1960's era 'good wife' drinks of the urn too, saying that when married she vowed to share her husband's fate. They lay down to rest, and when they awake, they are equal to that which they hunt. They are centaurs, powerful equine bodies and the wit and skill of their human minds. Now, at least physically equal to the unicorn.

The question is, who is the hunter now?

I have a lot to be thankful for, and one of those things is finding a copy of this magazine at a yard sale. It was the most striking exposure I had had to centaurs up until then, and it made a strong impression on me. Since finding this magazine, I've been searching out centaur items ever since.

The great artwork, and the 'heroic poses' show off the physique of the centaur remarkably well in this work. Wally Wood, who for many years drew for fantasy and science fiction publications, left behind a remarkable body of work before his death in 1981.

This story takes place before the time of recorded history. A time when gods and demons fought over the earth. When nymphs and satyrs, and yes, centaurs enjoyed idillic lives with little to cause them worry. Although our lead character's name, Sentor Aquinas (Centaur Equinus), isn't a name I'd have picked, it's sort of like calling a person People Human, he is a noble and caring being. And, he's a centaur. While stopping by a stream, he is enraptured by her song, and sees (Here we go) a beautiful humanoid female. At the time of this story, humans don't seem to be around yet. He is startled as she flies off on a winged dinosaur, and gallops after her.

As a flock (?) of winged demons attack, the nymph's dinosaur is forced down, and she falls with a bone crushing crash. With the demons in hot pursuit, the centaur scoops up the female and gallops into a ruined termple where he prays to his ancient god to save her. He does and they spend a few moments eating the fruit of the land, and admiring one another. The story can't end there, because the gods are at war and Centaur Equiss has a mission.

A somewhat sad story, and not well paced, the artwork alone is worth the price of a back issue of this magazine. If there are requests, and / or I find time, I will re-scan these pages at a higher resolution.

(I need to grab a copy of this...)

Quote, by Centaursite.com - Advanced Dungeons and Dragons:

Dungeons and Dragons. This role playing game was a natural for many folks who enjoyed fantasy and myth. For many centaur fans, the chance to play a centaur couldn't be resisted, and for other players, the chance encounter with one was usually welcomed.

In Dungeons and Dragons, and Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Centaurs are recognised races. Although usually neutral in the affairs of men, they would strike aliances when it was to their advantage. Usually 'woodland' creatures, they would more often find adventurers, than be found by them. The Slayers' Guide to Centaurs, is an invaluble source of information concerning centaur characters,

In an attempt to open another outlet for D&D fans, a comic, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, was published, It ran for about 24 issues, and faded away. Considering the swing of comic characters from hero to angsters, it was a bit out of place. And the medevial style of life wasn't what most comic readers were looking for. The use of magic, the variation in art work, and the wild swings in story quality, made it a comic only hard core D&D gamers might read. The inclusion of a centaur as a major character though, made it a must have for centaur fans.

Timoth, the centaur warriorr, and his dwarf associate Onyx had adventures with a group of rogues, theives, magic users, clerics... about any sort of D&D character you can imagine. The visibility and featured role of Timoth is challenged only by that of Prince Argon in The Micronauts". He is a fairly well rounded character with an easy going attitude. Although he will sometimes make a joke poking fun at his 'horse-like', aspects, He also has the proper, 'I am not a horse' attitude of a self respecting centaur, his 'horse' ears make that a hard statement to believe at first glance.

As usual, only the pages featuring centaur charaters are shown. I'll get around to scanning and posting more as I get time or requests.

Good cover art, a far different style of story art. The female centaur on the cover becomes thin and enlongated and just really strange looking on the interior pages. Not to say the art style is bad, just not to my taste. None the less, it's far better than anything I can draw, and it's an interesting story of a world where centaurs, humans, centaur magic users, and a fallen angel all come into play. And the thing is, the more I look at this comic, the better the style looks.

I have heard that the next comic again has the centaur in it, but reviews of Lucifer #26 don't refer to her, and unless I can be sure, I'm not going to worry about posting it. If you have information, please contact me at [email protected]

Below I've posted the entire Lucifer #25 comic. Not being a regular reader of this comic, I have no idea what the back story, or set up is, who the characters are, or what the heck is going on.
