Centaur Books

Quote, by centaursite.com:

From ancient times, there hace been stories about centaurs. The ancient Greeks and other people had these mysterious creatures in their pantheon of myth and fantasy.

Through the ages, the mystique of the centaur remained. Dante, when writing his Inferno included centaurs in this classic work, but it wasn't until the 1950s and 60s that the centaur returned to popularity in literature. As science fiction became popular, centaurs, with their alien yet familiar appearance, were featured in a number of works. Familiar in they had human and equine aspects, and the form was familar to the reader, yet alien in the combination of these aspects into one being. Science fiction, with its settings of advanced science, space flight, and creatures from other worlds, was a perfect setting for centaur characters.

Of course, even in the advanced world of the future shown in science fiction, centaurs, like other people and creatures, were depicted on both sides of the law. Some were good, others bad. Some hailing from other worlds, others humans transformed into centaurs.

Still, centaurs in books and stories of any kind are fun to read. Seeing how writers view the form, and especially how it effects those who have gone from human to centaur, sheds more light on the experience of being a centaur.

Below are some books that not only feature centaurs, but depict them in their cover illustrations. Click on the thumbnails for a larger image. Thanks to Idaho Bob's Centaurs in Literature page from his site The Idaho Bob Zone, which gave me a heads up on the books here I haven't read .

A must read series for any centaur fan. This is the first book of Chalker's most famous series. There are Centaurs in almost every book. Midnight at the Well of Souls was written to stand alone, and has the most complete story line of all the stories. If you were to only read one of these books, Midnight would be the best.

Knight Moves by Walter Jon Williams - "A Story of the Future where everything went right." The centaurs are only in the last part of chapter one Still, the cover is a very nice depiction of the centaur form. The harp is a bit over the top though.

Piers Anthony's Xanth is a magical land full of magic, magical and mythological creatures, (including centaurs) and terrible puns.
The books feature a lot of giggly sexual innuendo, mythical beings, oh, and did I mention the bad puns>

Xanth has centaurs, the result, legend says, of early explorers and their horses drinking from a spring that flowed with 'love potient', resulting in, as is perfectly reasonable in a magical land, centaurs. Later centaurs and birds drank from the same spring resulting in winged centaurs. Who knows what else those love potient springs resulted in? I'm not sure I want to even think about it, but I'm sure it has some terrible puns associated with it.

Xanth, according to the maps of it in the books, looks an awful lot like the state of Florida. As author Anthony is reported to live in Tampa, Florida, the similarity isn't surprizing, it's almost a play on the outline of Florida, or a pun on it's shape. As you go north towards Georgia, the magic fades away.

Anyway, as centaurs are featured in this series of books, quite a few of them have centaurs on their covers. Here are all I can recall. If you know of ones I've missed, let me know. And don't send me any puns.
